Triple Cheese Sourdough Grilled Cheese (Printable Version)

Layers of cheddar, provolone, and mozzarella between golden, crispy sourdough slices. Pure comfort food perfection.

# What You'll Need:

→ Bread & Cheese

01 - 4 slices thick sourdough bread
02 - 2 slices sharp cheddar cheese
03 - 2 slices provolone cheese
04 - 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

→ Spreads & Fats

05 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
06 - 1 tablespoon mayonnaise, optional for extra crispiness

# How To Make:

01 - Lay out sourdough slices on a clean work surface. Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each slice. If using mayonnaise, apply a thin layer to the opposite side of each slice for enhanced crispiness.
02 - Place two slices of bread on a work surface with buttered side facing down. Layer each slice with one slice of cheddar cheese, one slice of provolone cheese, and half of the shredded mozzarella cheese.
03 - Top each cheese-layered bread slice with a remaining bread slice, positioning the buttered side facing up.
04 - Place a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat and allow it to preheat for 1-2 minutes until moderately hot.
05 - Place assembled sandwiches in the heated skillet. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes per side, applying gentle pressure with a spatula, until bread achieves a golden-brown color and all cheese is completely melted. Flip carefully to prevent cheese spillage.
06 - Transfer cooked sandwiches to a cutting board and allow to rest for 1 minute. Cut diagonally and serve immediately while hot.

# Helpful Hints:

01 -
  • The combination of three cheeses creates layers of flavor that sharp cheddar alone just cannot achieve
  • That crispy sourdough exterior against the molten interior is basically edible therapy
02 -
  • Medium low heat is non negotiable because high heat burns the bread before the cheese melts
  • Butter and mayo together might seem excessive but that combination creates the ultimate crispy crust
03 -
  • A cast iron skillet creates the most even browning but any heavy bottomed pan works beautifully
  • Grate your own mozzarella instead of buying pre shredded for the best melting results
